XTX Markets announces latest grants for AI-assisted mathematics
Following the update on our AI for maths philanthropy, we are delighted to announce the second in a series of new grants, which aim to build the technical and community infrastructure for a new age of mathematical discovery.
£5m to establish the Langlands Lab. This grant will enable the creation of the Langlands Lab at Imperial College London, led by Prof Kevin Buzzard. The lab will recruit a team of PhD students and postdocs to work on the Langlands programme, using AI-assisted methods and with access to significant compute. It will test new approaches to mathematics research, including team-based publication and novel ways of recognising individual contributions to collaborative and AI-assisted mathematics. In doing so, the lab will explore how to understand, explain and communicate mathematics research in the age of AI. Recruitment will begin soon for enrolment in October 2027.
£500k to the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The ICMS is a research institute, hosted jointly by the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, which supports the UK mathematics community by delivering international workshops and research-focused activities. This grant will fund a sprint to better understand the AI access and training needs of UK mathematicians, with up to £200k allocated for compute. It will include a consultation with mathematicians and a series of workshops to develop and share best practices, leading to a plan for long-term provision of AI access and training.
$170k to Convergent Research. Convergent Research builds focused research organisations, non-profit startups that build foundational capabilities for scientific and technological progress. Lean FRO is one such example. This grant will fund a sprint to test options for developing an online research workspace for mathematicians, which will bring together several AI-enhanced tools and capabilities in one place. The work will be led by mathematicians, and will assess options including: multimodal reasoning tools; harnessing tools; formalising tools, proof assistants; research agents for tasks such as literature search, computation and verification; and authoring and typesetting tools.
Each of these initiatives grew organically from our conversations with the mathematical community, including through conferences and workshops. Looking forward, XTX Markets will continue to engage with mathematicians, and we welcome ideas to build an optimistic future for mathematics.
